Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000) Is Available.

The Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Database Engine (MSDE 2000) is now available from Microsoft (link to Microsoft SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine information) and has the following advantages:

• MSDE 2000 is FREE to distribute with your applications if you own a MSDE Universal Subscription.
• Clients can access the MSDE for FREE without requiring a licence.
• Databases created with MSDE are 100 percent compatible with Microsoft SQL Server 2000.
• Microsoft are allowing companies to freely distribute the MSDE 2000 with the objective that you will purchase the Microsoft SQL 2000, because the latter version provides a Windows interface for administration (i.e. Microsoft Enterprise Manager). However why purchase the Microsoft Tools when other options are available?

Microsoft Data Engine 1.0 (MSDE 1.0) that is Compatible with Microsoft SQL Server 7.0 No Longer Available

Microsoft no longer distribute the Microsoft Data Engine 1.0 (MSDE 1.0) that is compatible with SQL Server 7.0. Microsoft have replaced the latter MSDE with the SQL Server 2000 Desktop Engine (MSDE 2000). See this link for more information about the MSDE 1.0.

Our Products Do Not Use the SQL-NS Libraries

Our MSDE products do not use the SQL Namespace (SQL-NS) libraries. This means these tool does not infringe any Microsoft distribution agreements, and therefore companies that distribute these tools with their products are legal to do so.

It should be noted that other MSDE tools are available, but these may use the SQL-NS (sqlns.dll) Microsoft libraries. These libraries are not free to distribute and distribution of them could result with prosecution. See the FAQ for more information. The products at WWW.MSDE do not use SQL-NS so these products can be distributed without infringement of Microsoft licensing.
